The drone has experienced a lost-link emergency that progresses into uncontrolled landing, drifting, or departure from the area of operations.

Pre-flight Preparation

  1. All preparations from “Lost Link”; and,
  2. If available, program geofence boundaries to limit maximum flight range
  3. If near controlled airspace, collect the telephone number of the airport and the radio frequency for air traffic control.

Emergency Response

  1. Immediate Actions
    1. Verbally announce “Fly Away” to your sUAS Aircrew & nearby Teams or persons
    2. Anticipate geofence contingency behavior (if applicable)
    3. Record — battery life, speed, altitude, travel heading
  2. Secondary Actions
    1. Continue sending RTH command
    2. If geofencing fails and drone is inside or headed towards controlled airspace, contact air traffic control and report a fly away. Provide recorded flight details from earlier.
  3. Location and Recovery
    1. Contact the CAP National Operations Center (888-211-1812) and report a fly away
    2. Use the “Last Know Position” and “Last Flight” features of the sUAS (if available) to establish an area of probability and terrain landmarks.
